Yahoo Launches Its Answer To Google Instant: ?Search Direct?

Yes, Yahoo is launching a new product today that you might actually be interested in. It's derivative, but it looks useful. Today at a press event in San Francisco, the company announced the launch of a new product called 'Search Direct'. It looks a lot like Google Instant: as you start typing a query into Yahoo Search, the site will begin populating results with each new character entered (in other words, you don't have to hit the 'return' key). The feature is now live at search.yahoo.com. Google Instant, of course, has done the same thing since September. But Yahoo says that Search Direct is looking to help match users with "answers, not links". As you start typing, a small rectangular widget will slide down from the search bar and show rich results whenever available ?do a query for "Derrick", and you'll see quick breakdown of basketball player Derrick Rose's stats. Search for a city and you'll see weather widgets and nearby sports team schedules. Google Instant also shows rich results when possible, but Yahoo Search Direct does seem faster, in part because it isn't refreshing the whole page.

Samsung Galaxy S II shows up in Ukraine, gets a loving preview (video)

Where would we be without prototypes, eh? One such pre-production unit, of Samsung's dual-core Galaxy S II, has escaped into the Russian Ukrainian wilderness, where it's been thankfully rescued from the cold by the guys over at gagadget. Apart from squaring it up against the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 -- which we can only surmise was the nearest available Android handset, it surely can't have been the best -- they also dig pretty deeply into the latest TouchWiz UI and dish up a thoroughgoing gallery of sample images from that 8 megapixel autofocus camera on the back. It's an enlightening read, once you've enrolled Google Translate's help, though the video after the break might not be too informative if English is your only language. Still, it's a great visual tour of some yummy hardware.

[Thanks, DarkDvr]

Amazon blocks Lendle e-book sharing service (update: it's back!)

Whether via public library or personal collection, e-books may be getting harder to borrow and loan out -- HarperCollins put the squeeze on government-funded rentals last week, and today Amazon has allegedly disabled e-book sharing startup Lendle with one fell stroke. Lendle allows readers to trade e-book rentals, in a fashion, by tapping Amazon's API to list books they agree to loan out, and in return, gain access to a Lendle database of books available to borrow from readers like themselves. The service allegedly fell under the auspices of Amazon's existing 14-day, one-time-only loaning policy, but that didn't stop Amazon from revoking Lendle's access to the API, effectively shutting the service down. According to the no-reply email Lendle received, the reason is that the service doesn't "serve the principal purpose of driving sales of products and services on the Amazon site." Perhaps there's some deeper reason behind the move, but that explanation certainly sounds pretty narrow-minded.

Update: Well that was quick -- Lendle is now reporting that Amazon has reinstated its API access under the condition that Lendle disables its Book Sync tool, which is a non-essential feature anyway. Great, just in time for bedtime stories on the west coast as well.

iMovie for iPad 2 Is All Awesomeness, Frame by Frame

I used the first version of Apple's iMovie app on my iPhone 4, and I thought it was pretty good. But the new iMovie version 1.2 for iPad is so freaking good, it's surprising. In fact, as I was learning to use it, I forgot that I was basically editing a movie on a tablet, using video I had shot with a smartphone. Not so long ago, I wouldn't even have imagined this would be possible.

Internet Explorer and Safari first to fall at Pwn2Own 2011, Chrome and Firefox still standing

Pwn2Own Firefox and Chrome still standing
Pwn2Own, the annual three-day browser hackathon, has already claimed its first two victims: IE8 on Windows 7 64-bit, and Safari 5 on Mac OS X. Google Chrome looks set to survive for its third year in a row.

Internet Explorer 8 was thoroughly destroyed by independent researcher Stephen Fewer. "He used three vulnerabilities to bypass ASLR and DEP, but also escape Protected Mode. That's something we've not seen at Pwn2Own before," said Aaron Portnoy, the organizer of Pwn2Own.

Safari 5, running on a MacBook Air, was compromised in just five seconds by French security company Vupen. Both attackers netted $15,000 for successfully compromising a browser.

The contest continues today and tomorrow. Firefox 3.6 is yet to be attacked, and tomorrow will see the very first mobile browser deathmatch. Windows Phone 7, iOS, Android and RIM OS, all with their stock browsers, will be attacked by security researchers to find out just how secure mobile browsing is. Again, $15,000 is available for the first person or team to compromise each of the browsers.

Google, Apple and Mozilla, incidentally, all rolled out updates to their browsers just before Pwn2Own. It was not a coincidence.

AVG AirSpace cloud sync and backup for Windows enters beta

We told you AVG was getting into the cloud sync and storage game, and now you can take the company's beta app for a test drive. You'll need to fill out a brief survey and a registration form, but then AVG will fork over 5GB of cloud storage into which you can sync anything you choose from your Windows systems.

Once the service exits beta, you'll be able to pay for additional storage. It's also worth knowing that AVG AirSpace (or LiveKive, whichever name the company settles on) functions both as a sync and a backup utility. You can even back up multiple machines' data into the same storage account.

AirSpace also offers a way for you to share uploaded files with your friends and colleagues, just like Dropbox. Unfortunately, at least for the time being, there's only a Windows AirSpace installer -- Mac and Linux aren't supported, and no mobile apps are available either.

Download every Sports Illustrated Swimsuit model photo from 1996 to 2011

If you're into buxom bikini-clad babes, the same ingenious script kiddie behind the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit 2010 and 2011 Perl script downloaders has released a tool to download every photo from 1996 through to 2011, totalling some 7,604 images, or around 15,208 breasts.

This new downloader began its life as a way to circumvent the security measures that Sports Illustrated introduced to prevent the 2011 Perl script downloader from working. SI.com obfuscated the URLs of its photos, breaking the 'dumb' Perl script which just iterated through sequentially-numbered images. The new downloader is more intelligent -- though the developer doesn't say exactly how the new downloader does things -- which will make it harder for for Sports Illustrated to block.

You will need a Windows machine to run the new downloader (or you could virtualize Windows under Linux or Mac), and the .NET 4 Framework (which you probably already have installed).

The downloader will take a while, especially if you want to download every photo from 1996 through to 2011 -- 4 hours, by the developer's reckoning. Having said that, it only took us about 20 minutes to download the 1,400 photos from 2011, so it probably depends on your Internet connection.

Note: the downloader kind of 'locks up' while it's running -- you can still see it downloading, but you can't minimize it or close it. Also, it 'counts up' as it discovers valid photo URLs before it starts downloading, so don't be alarmed if it takes a while for pretty photos to start appearing. If, for some reason, you want to stop the downloader, you have to kill the process via Task Manager.

Twitter adds permanent HTTPS option for improved security

Those of you who don't want your Twitter account 'jacked like so many unsuspecting Firesheep victims, take heed! Twitter has added an "always use HTTPS" option to its settings page for added security while you tweet, @mention, and DM.

There's really no reason not to enable permanent HTTPS, so click the drop down by your avatar, choose settings, and then head all the way to the bottom of the page. Pop in a checkmark, enter your password, and save. Now each time you visit the site, your activity will be wrapped in 256-bit AES encryption.

Twitter's mobile website does not currently support the permanent setting, but the company says it's being worked on.

How to edit your comments on Facebook

Editing Facebook comments
Facebook recently rolled out an update to its commenting system. Now, instead of pressing Comment, you simply press the Enter key to save a comment. More excitingly, however, Facebook silently rolled out another new feature at the same time: you can now edit comments!

If you comment on a friend's status update, link or photo, you can now press the 'X' in the top right corner to edit it. Your comment instantly turns into a text box where you can alter what you've written; then just press Enter to save it again.

There are some caveats, though! First, if someone comments after you, your comment is locked; you can still delete it, but you can't edit. Second, there seems to be some kind of time limit on editing. The editing window might be as short as 60 seconds. Still, for those of you that have 'accidentally' submitted comments by pressing Enter, the ability to edit is a godsend.

It's also worth noting that everyone still gets email (and SMS!) notifications when you comment, and when you edit comments.

Shot Shot Pirate is a fun, simple physics game

shotshotpirate
Shot Shot Pirate is very satisfying, because each level is short and to the point. You know what you have to do and you just do it.

As you may have gathered from the name, you're cast in the role of a pirate. Your goal is to shoot at a diamond and make it fall off a tower of bricks. The height of the tower changes as you progress through the levels. It's not enough to just make the diamond fall off the tower of bricks - it has to fall below a certain line (drawn on the screen) for the level to be completed.

There are also different kinds of bricks, with some heavier than others, and different kinds of ammo. You only get a certain amount of ammo for each level, and when it's gone, you lose. But don't worry! If you don't make it on the first try, it's very easy to restart the level and just give it another shot (or three).

All in all it's a cute game. I've seen similar games with better graphics and music, but the game delivers on its main promise - a few minutes of pure time wasting!

Texas researchers aim to solve wireless bandwidth bottleneck, hopefully before SXSW 2012

As anyone attempting to stream high-quality video on any major metropolitan subway has likely found, doing so often requires the patience of Job and a willingness to spend more time 'buffering' and less time 'enjoying.' It's a problem that's particularly evident at crowded events like the never-ending South by Southwest, and it's probably no coincidence that a team from The University of Texas at Austin are now spending their waking hours attempting to solve the looming wireless bandwidth crisis. Five faculty in the school's Electrical and Computer Engineering Department have been selected to receive a $900,000 gift from Intel and Cisco to "develop innovative and novel algorithms that could improve the wireless networks ability to store, stream and share mobile videos more efficiently." Their work is part of a five university tie-up, seeking to solve quandaries such as tower interference, selective compression (read: pixelating the areas you don't pay attention to in order to squeeze more out of the existing infrastructure), cell tower intelligence and data output redundancy. Hard to say if any of the major carriers will be implementing proposed solutions in the near future, but we can think of at least one company that's crossing its fingers in hopes of that very outcome.

Microsoft seeks legal action against Barnes & Noble, Foxconn and Inventec for patent infringement

Microsoft just fired another shot at Android, this time aiming at Barnes & Noble and various other companies associated in the manufacturing of the Nook Color such as Foxconn and Inventec. The lawsuit filed against Barnes & Noble, Foxconn and Inventec states Microsoft owns several patents that according to Microsoft, are violated within the Android OS and as such they want profits off those patents or they'll take you to court.

“The Android platform infringes a number of Microsoft’s patents, and companies manufacturing and shipping Android devices must respect our intellectual property rights. To facilitate that we have established an industry-wide patent licensing program for Android device manufacturers,” said Horacio Gutierrez, Corporate Vice President and Deputy General Counsel for Intellectual Property & Licensing. “HTC, a market leader in Android smartphones, has taken a license under this program. We have tried for over a year to reach licensing agreements with Barnes & Noble, Foxconn and Inventec. Their refusals to take licenses leave us no choice but to bring legal action to defend our innovations and fulfill our responsibility to our customers, partners, and shareholders to safeguard the billions of dollars we invest each year to bring great software products and services to market,” he added.

The issue at hand here for Microsoft stems from a patent claiming Android uses "natural ways of interacting with devices by tabbing through various screens to find the information they need; surfing the Web more quickly, and interacting with documents and e-books." -- Broad scope really but that is how patents work for better or worse.

As noted in the information, Microsoft claims they attempted to reach a valid agreement for the past year but Barnes & Noble, Foxconn and Inventec have refused to accept the licensing conditions and as such, Microsoft will invoke their rights to sue. What do you all think, some bitterness there or is Microsoft just protecting what is rightfully theirs? Sound off in the comments, folks. [Microsoft]

Torus is an impressive 3D Tetris game powered by HTML5

torus
As far as Tetris goes, most variations look quite similar. You're usually looking at a "wall" of bricks directly from the front. Torus takes that notion and throws it away; as you might have guessed from the name (or screenshot), this Tetris clone is played on a ring-like 3D surface.

You rotate the ring itself with the arrow keys, while a Tetris-like piece slowly (excruciatingly slowly, in fact) descends from the top. As soon as you make a solid line, it disappears.

Not all pieces are Tetris-like; some of them wouldn't really work with a regular Tetris game but are a good fit for Torus' 3D format.

Torus is ideal for playing at the office, because it has absolutely no soundtrack. The game is dead-quiet. It's also very very slow (slow enough for me to mention it twice in one post) so you can safely look away for a moment and then keep playing. Also, as soon as the game loses focus, it automatically pauses.

Bottom line: It's an impressive demo of the power of HTML5; if it were a bit faster, it would have some serious addictive potential.
